Using a giant stack of money as an imaginary cell phone isn’t going to be tolerated in Cleveland, at least not while Jimmy Haslam’s in charge.
Since being drafted by the Browns on May 8, Johnny Manziel has turned into a one-man fun factory. The rookie has taken a Vegas vacation AND sipped champagne from an inflatable swan, but it’s his latest antic that has caught the ire of the Browns owner.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Haslam wasn’t thrilled with Johnny Football’s conversation into an imaginary cell phone made of cash. In an Instagram video from June 15, you can hear Manziel say, “I can’t hear you. I have too much money in my F—— hand.”
“It did not sit well with the owner Jimmy Haslam, who did instruct his staff to at least have a talk with Johnny about being more savvy as he deals with social media,” Mortensen said on ESPN’s NFL Insiders via Cleveland.com. “We know you’re young. We know you’re single. Joe Montana himself said that Bill Walsh pulled him aside, and that was before the age of social media. Johnny Manziel has been told to tone it down, and to watch what goes up on social media.”
Haslam might have instructed his staff to talk to Manziel, but it doesn’t appear that the conversation has happened yet. Manziel was asked on Friday if he had been told to tone down his partying and he said no.
Johnny Football also added that he’s not going to ‘change for anybody.’
“I’m not going to change who I am for anybody,” Manziel said. “I’m growing up and continuing to learn from my mistakes and trying not to make the same ones over and over again, but am I going to live in a shell or am I just going to hide from everybody and not do anything? I don’t think that’s the way I should live my life and I’m not going to do it.”
Manziel now has four weekends off until the Browns first training camp practice on July 26 and it doesn’t sound like he plans on toning it down.
“I’m here, I’m very committed to football. I’m committed to my job, but on the weekends, I’m going to enjoy my time off. We deserve it,” Manziel said.
It sounds like there could be a few more inflatable animal rides in the future for Johnny Football.
